Buddy Montgomery

Biography

Indianapolis native Charles "Buddy" Montgomery, the younger brother of jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery, became a well know jazz vibraphonist during the late 1940s. Initially performing as a pianist, he showcased his skills alongside renowned blues singer Big Joe Turner. However, in 1956, Montgomery made a pivotal switch to the vibraphone and formed The Mastersounds, a band that included his older brother Monk on bass. During this time, he also collaborated with his two older siblings as The Montgomery Brothers and briefly joined the group led by the iconic Miles Davis. As the 1960s progressed, Montgomery ventured into his solo career and eventually transitioned into the realm of jazz education. His unique blend of blues and bop on the vibraphone showcase previous vibes legends such as Milt Jackson.
