Jazz Empowers Student Advisory Council

What Is It? The Jazz Empowers student advisory council is a highly selective committee of dedicated jazz students from across the country. The council meets on a monthly basis to build community with other jazz students, become better musicians, and provide feedback on how jazz is taught in schools.

Who Can Apply? High school student that participates in jazz bands at Jazz Empowers partner schools.

Why Should You Apply?

  • All council members will receive a $500 scholarship at the end of the school year.

  • The council will allow you to connect with other students across the country that are just as passionate about jazz as you.

  • It will provide a great leadership opportunity to represent your school and community. 

  • Receive advice on college application/auditions.

Expectations - Below are the following expectations for all student council members.

  • Attend monthly one-hour long council meetings on Zoom. (December 2024 through April 2025)

  • Respond to Jazz Empowers communications within 48 hours.

  • Provide monthly updates on progress in jazz band/school to Jazz Empowers.

  • Continue to be an active leader in their school’s jazz band.

  • Actively participate in council discussions during meetings.

Application Play Along Track

How To Apply -  Click one of the apply buttons on this page along to access the application.   The application will ask you a few questions and you will also have to submit a video or audio recording of yourself playing your instrument.  It can be anything that you feel will best showcase your playing.  If you are looking for ideas you can take an improvised solo on 2-4 choruses on the Bb blues track listed on this page.  The video and audio quality does not need to be fancy so feel free to record yourself on your phone or computer.
