Biography

Phil Woods was Born in 1931 in Springfield Massachusetts. He gained serious music education from his time at Manhattan School of Music, Juilliard, and also from his connection with Lennie Tristano. Although Phil Woods’ saxophone virtuosity did not come from copying Charlie Parker, he was dubbed the ‘new bird’. His career spanned decades, from the 50’s up to his death in 2015. Woods had an incredible shortlist of associated acts, some of whom are Ron Carter, Lou Donaldson, Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Benny Goodman, Thelonious Monk, Oliver Nelson as well as countless others.
