Alice Coltrane

Biography

Alice Coltrane was an accomplished pianist and harpist. She was born in 1937 in Detroit, Michigan. Her mother was a singer in a choir and her father was a jazz bassist. Her father encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She studied both classical and jazz music, learning from several notable musicians including pianist Bud Powell. She met John Coltrane in 1962, and the two married in 1965. She would eventually end up replacing McCoy Tyner as pianist in Coltrane’s group.
