Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band
History
Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band’s air-tight playing and energetic arrangements exemplify the Los Angeles big band sound. Composer, pianist, and saxophonist Gordon Goodwin founded the band in 1999, wanting a steady format to present his catalogue of big band arrangements. Goodwin, as well as many of the players in the band, came from a studio background, and at first only intended to record an album. However, a gig at Cal State University Northridge convinced everyone involved that the band needed to go out in the world and perform, kicking off a run that has lasted over twenty years. Combining pop, rock, and funk with big band arranging reminiscent of the 1930s and 40s, the Big Phat Band has a playful sound that audiences love. To date, the Big Phat Band has collected two Grammy Awards and four nominations. Some of Goodwin’s most popular arrangements include The Jazz Police, Count Bubba, and Sing, Sang, Sung, and have become favorites of high school and college bands.
