Bio

Emily Remler was born in 1957 in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Emily began to play the guitar at age 10. She eventually attended Berklee College of Music during the 1970’s, and it was during this time that she started to listen to such guitar players as Herb Ellis, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Joe Pass, and Pat Martino. Her playing was indeed virtuosic, but she advocated for a more simple approach to improvising. It was often stated that she would swing ‘simpler.’ Her style of guitar playing was deeply rooted in the hard bop tradition, but she was also deeply into Brazilian styles such as Bossa Nova. She even toured for 2 years with Astrud Gilberto. In 1985, she won the Downbeat award for guitarist of the year. Some other musicians that she has played with include, Hank Jones, Buster Williams, Eddie Gomez, David Benoit, and Larry Coryell.
