Bio

Hubert Laws was born in 1939 in Houston, Texas. He was versed in music from an early age. His childhood home was directly across the street from a honky tonk, and his family were all gospel musicians. He would begin his classical training in high school, and eventually go on to study music at South Texas University. After this period, he travelled to California with the Jazz Crusaders, and soon after was awarded a scholarship to Juilliard. While at Juilliard, he began to work gigs across New York City at night. He was soon playing with the likes of Mongo Santamaria and John Lewis. Slowly but surely, Hubert Laws began to do more and more recording work, and would feature on recordings made by Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, Lena Horne, George Benson, Clark Terry, and J.J. Johnson. This time period was incredibly fertile for Hubert, as he expanded his musicality to fit all genres. He was another flautist who was able to adapt with the changing times, and apply his musicianship to a wide swathe of music.
