Jimmy Garrison
Bio
Jimmy Garrison was a jazz basist who was born in 1934 in Miami, Florida. At the age of 10, Garrison relocated to Philadelphia where he picked up the bass and met fellow musicians Reggie Workman, Henry Grimes, Lee Morgan, and McCoy Tyner. In his early career (1957-1962), Garrison recorded with Kenny Dorham, Tony Scott, Philly Joe Jones, Bill Barron, Lee Konitz, Jackie McLean, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, Lennie Tristano, and Pharoah Sanders. In 1961, he worked with Ornette Colman. In 1962, he formally joined John Coltrane’s quartet, the acomplishment he is most known for. Garrison was featured on several Coltrane records including A Love Supreme.
