Maria Schneider Orchestra

History

Maria Schneider formed her jazz orchestra in 1992, and has since recorded nine albums with the group. She released the orchestra’s first album, Evanescence, in 1994, and began making her mark with a distinct way of composing and arranging. Some of the compositions featured on that first album, like her song “Wyrgly,” remain some of her most popular arrangements. Since then, the Maria Schneider Orchestra has earned fourteen Grammy nominations, and won seven. Some of the most notable members include multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson, saxophonist Rich Perry, and trombonist John Fedchock. Though a small sample of the orchestra’s music exists on streaming, Schneider mainly distributes her music through ArtistShare. She has often advocated “owning your own data,” which streaming platforms rob from artists.
