Melba Liston (1926-1999) established herself in jazz history as a premier trombonist, composer, and arranger. Liston moved to Los Angeles at the age of 10, a place that she would call home for most of the rest of her life. She was an integral part of the thriving jazz scene in the 1940’s and 1950’s playing and recording with greats such as Dexter Gordon, Betty Carter, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey. She collaborated with the great Randy Weston and recorded eight albums with the pianist. In 1987 she was named as a National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master.
