Biography

Stuff Smith was born in Ohio and learned to play the violin from lessons with his father. He was a big fan of Louis Armstrong, which would eventually inspire him to play jazz instead of classical music. He was a regular player at dance clubs, and regularly played with jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. He was also featured on records with jazz greats Nat King Cole and Ella Fiztgerald.
