Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) is widely regarded as one of most unique and innovative voices in American music. Born in North Carolina, Monk moved to NYC with his family in 1922. He began playing piano at the age of 6 and began touring as a musician at the age of 17. Monk quickly became an integral part of the New York jazz scene in the 1940’s playing with many of the greats including Coleman Hawkins, Miles Davis, and Art Blakey. Monk is know for his original style of playing which is characterized by his angular melodies, intricate moving rhythms, and dissonant voicing - all which combine to make an original and innovative voice on the piano. Monk was also a prolific composer, writing over 70 compositions. He is the second most recorded jazz composer, right behind the great Duke Ellington.
