Vincent Herring

Biography

Vincent Herring was born in 1964 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. He moved to California with his mother when he was 11, and when he was 16, he enrolled in California State University, Chico on a music scholarship. Soon after, he auditioned for the first alto chair in the US Military Academy Band, was accepted, and moved to West Point for one year. He moved to New York City in 1982. Herring’s style, while heavy rooted in the tradition, pushes outwards and upwards with traceable influences from artists who pushed the bebop idiom further and further. Among the musicians that Herring has shared the stage with are, Art Blakey, Nat Adderley, Jack DeJohnette, Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Hargrove and Nancy Wilson.
